DETAILED ITINERARY

  • Day 1: Hanoi – Vu Linh (Thác Bà Lake) ~180 km (B/L)

    • We leave Hanoi and quickly break away from the busy delta roads, riding through farmland and limestone karst formations that mark the transition into northern highlands. The route flows easily along quiet provincial roads lined with rice paddies, small villages, and tree-shaded lanes.

After lunch in Việt Trì, we continue deeper into the countryside until the landscape opens onto the shimmering waters of Thác Bà Lake. By late afternoon, we arrive in Vu Linh, home of the Dao people. Here we settle into a traditional wooden stilt house, enjoy a warm local welcome, and relax beside the lake.
  • Day 2: Vu Linh – Ba Bể National Park ~200 km (B/L/D)

    • Today’s ride offers a mix of gentle mountain roads and beautiful tea-covered hillsides. We trace the edge of the Sông Gâm mountain range, choosing between a smoother paved route or a more adventurous option crossing rocky forest paths along the range’s tail end.

From Tuyên Quang, we follow winding sealed roads through famous tea plantations, where the hills seem completely carpeted in green. The scenery grows more dramatic as we near Ba Bể National Park, entering a peaceful valley of stilt houses, rivers, and dense forest.

We spend the night in a cozy Tày family homestay near the lake.
  • Day 3: Ba Bể Lake – Bắc Kạn ~70 km (B/L/D)

    • In the morning we ride a short distance to visit a local market, where various ethnic groups gather to trade fresh produce, forest herbs, and handmade goods.

Returning to the village, we board a traditional boat for a peaceful journey across Ba Bể Lake. The emerald water winds through limestone cliffs, hidden coves, and jungle-covered slopes—one of the most tranquil landscapes in northern Vietnam.

After lunch, we ride south toward Bắc Kạn, arriving in town by late afternoon for dinner and a relaxing evening at a local hotel.
  • Day 4: Bắc Kạn – Hanoi ~200 km (B/ L)

    • Our final ride takes us along quiet backroads through rural Bắc Kạn province. We avoid the main highways, instead choosing smaller paved roads that wind through farmland, small villages, and forested hills.
After lunch on the way, we continue south and reach Hanoi in the afternoon, completing a refreshing journey through Vietnam’s northern lake districts.

Review of: From Hanoi - Vu Linh to Be lake 4 days 3 nights
The real Vietnam. Our favourite part of our holiday and most memorable. Drivers were good on difficult roads (personally I would not feel comfortable on public transport in this region). Mr Linh's Homestay is comfortable and rooms are air conditioned. A bonus is his fathers huge warm smile and rice wine. We were the only customers for the 4 day/3 night trek. Our guide Loan took great care of us, showing us through many minority ethnic villages on the way to his home for our overnight...Read More with his beautiful family. Unlike other home stays where we had our own room, here we were part of the family. A special treat being with his Mum, wife, and 2 gorgeous children (13 months and 7 years). A peaceful village where electricity is just being installed. The 20km trek up hills is tough but achievable and so worth it. Loan thank you very much for this special real experience - our Vietnam highlight.
We were lucky to have Mr Linh's Adventures marketing employee Tam join us. A delightful girl.
This tour company employs local Ba Be people.
If you would like to see the real Vietnam and challenge yourself a little, then Mr Linh's Adventures is the place. Highly, highly recommend Read Less
