Hanoi – Viet Quang – Tan Nam – Phieng Lang – Quang Nguyen – Coc Pai – Bac Ha.
Day 1: Hanoi – Viet Quang (B, L, D)
Your adventure will begin with a scenic drive to Viet Quang, taking you into the dramatic northern mountainous area. It is easy to be overwhelmed by sublime beauty and serenity of the area. You will have lunch at a local restaurant in Tuyen Quang. You will arrive in Viet Quang mid-afternoon, after which you will have free time to prepare for trekking the day after. You will stay overnight in a local guesthouse.
Day 2: Viet Quang – Tan Nam (B, L, D)
You will drive to Yen Binh where local porters will be ready to lead you on the trek. You will walk towards Pa Then Village surrounded by fantastic landscape scattered with palm trees. You will visit Pa Then Village where you can discover the traditional lifestyle of the local villagers. You will have a picnic lunch in a grassy field near an ethnic minority primary school. In the afternoon, you will gradually descend the paths via some tea plantations before arriving at Tan Nan Village of the Tay People. Here you will experience local life as you stay overnight in a stilt house.
Day 3: Tan Nam – Phieng Lang (B, L, D)
After a relaxing excursion along the river, you will trek deeper in the rugged, wild countryside. The path is quite easy with some gentle climbing up and down. The route passes through many streams and some houses of the Man Ao Dai ethnic communities. Here you can see the women working in the fields in their distinctive traditional attire of long robes and dyed black teeth. You will have lunch in a pretty stilt house in a Tay village. Afterwards, you will continue on the track to reach Phieu Lang village (Dzao people) where you will experience the warm hospitality of the locals with an overnight stay in a villager's stilt house.
Day 4: Phieng Lang – Quang Nguyen (B, L, D)
Today you will follow the contours of the rolling hillsides, taking in the fantastic views of the mountain range. Along the way, you will meet the Man Ao Dai people who do not live in a community but prefer settle where they have terrain to cultivate. At the end of the day, you will arrive in Quang Nguyen, a small remote market town situated beside a river. In the evening, you will have free time to unwind and enjoy a refreshing drink. You will stay overnight in the stilt house of a local family.
Day 5: Quang Nguyen – Coc Dong (B, L, D)
Today is the most challenging in terms of trekking but also the most rewarding. After 2 hours of following a flat path, you will begin the dizzying climb up the mountain.You will follow a small track through a thick primary rain forest. This track can be quite challenging if it has been raining, but this is the only route for local villagers going to Xin Man. You will have the opportunity to see many wild giant butterflies in a rainbow of colours, flitting through the fresh mountain air. At the altitude of about 2000m, an incredible highland of terraced paddies appears, decorating the rolling mountainsides. Weather permitting you will stop for a picnic lunch next to a waterfall. You will arrive mid afternoon at Coc Dong Village which belongs to the Nung hill tribe. You will stay overnight in the stilt house of a local family.
Day 6: Coc Dong – Coc Re – Coc Pai (B, L, D)
Today you will follow a small path which tracks along the middle of the mountain. Along the way, you will pass by scenes of paddy fields and meet H’Mong flower girls who stand out in their traditional red dresses. You will walk the descent into to Coc Re in the shadow of a newly planted forest surrounded by the sounds of the woodland creatures. You will have lunch at a local restaurant in Coc Re Market. The trek continues towards Coc Pai, a small mountainous town where you will stay overnight in a guesthouse.
Day 7: Coc Pai – Bac Ha (B, L, D)
Today you will take a short walk around Coc Pai before transferring to Bac Ha. You will arrive in Bac Ha in the late afternoon. Bac Ha is situated in the highlands and is mostly populated by the Flower H’Mong community who look amazing in their traditional outfits of colourful loom weaved fabric. You will spend the rest of the day exploring Bac Ha and the surrounding areas. You will have dinner and spend the night in a local homestay.
Day 8: Bac Ha – Coc Ly – Ha Noi (B, L)
You will continue the trip to Trung Do, a beautiful village inhabited by Tay people with surrounded by green rice terraces. On arrival at the Chay River, you will embark on sampan for an upstream cruise to Coc Ly Village where visitors enjoy the weekly multi-ethnic market held every Tuesday evening, an ideal place to meet local people. Ethnic groups from every part of the region come here to exchange their agricultural and handicraft products. After, you will transfer to Lao Cai and visit the border gate between Vietnam and China. In the evening, you will return Hanoi on the overnight train in the soft sleeper waggon.
