  • Day 1: Hanoi - Thai Nguyen - Bac Son Valley

    • Meals: L/D
Accommodation: Tay ethnic homestay in Bac Son

After leaving Hanoi, we begin our 4WD journey into the northeast of Vietnam. The busy capital soon gives way to rural landscapes, tea plantations, mountain roads, and quiet villages.

We drive through Thai Nguyen and Vo Nhai, passing green tea valleys before following National Road 1B towards Bac Son. This scenic route gives a first taste of the landscapes that make the northeast such a rewarding region for adventure travellers.

Along the way, we visit a prehistoric cave where traces of early human life were discovered. We then continue to a remarkable defence cave and tunnel system, once used to hide military equipment during the resistance against French colonial forces. The tunnel stretches for around 2 km through the mountain and offers a fascinating look into the hidden wartime history of the region.

In the afternoon, we arrive in Bac Son, one of the most beautiful valleys in northern Vietnam. We climb to a viewpoint above the valley, where rice fields, limestone peaks, and Tay villages open into a magnificent panorama.

Later, we descend to the valley and settle into a local Tay ethnic homestay. Dinner will be served in a warm village atmosphere.

      Overnight in Bac Son.
  • Day 2: Bac Son - Trang Dinh - Dong Khe - Ban Gioc Waterfall

    • Meals: B/L/D
Accommodation: Nung ethnic bungalow near Ban Gioc Waterfall

Wake up in the peaceful morning of Bac Son before we continue deeper into the borderland region. Today is one of the most adventurous driving days of the journey.

From Bac Son, we take a winding semi-off-road route towards Trang Dinh. The road passes through eucalyptus forests, mountain slopes, ethnic villages, and local market areas. A rough section of around 20 km gives the journey a real expedition feeling, as the jeep moves through a rarely visited part of northeast Vietnam.

We then continue towards Dong Khe, where we stop to visit an old French colonial prison and military site. This historic location now serves as a war museum and still carries the memory of the colonial period and the conflicts that shaped this region.

In the afternoon, we drive towards Ban Gioc Waterfall, passing through a beautiful area of ethnic minority villages and craft communities. Depending on local conditions, we may stop to visit a knife-making village, a handmade paper village, and a traditional bamboo weaving village.

There will be time for short walks, photos, and local encounters before we continue towards the Vietnam-China border.
By late afternoon, we arrive in the Ban Gioc area, close to one of Vietnam's most impressive waterfalls.

Dinner and overnight in a Nung ethnic bungalow near Ban Gioc Waterfall.
  • Day 3: Ban Gioc Waterfall - Nguom Ngao Cave - Border Patrol Route - Cao Bang

    • Meals: B/L/D
Accommodation: Hotel in Cao Bang City

This morning, we visit the spectacular Ban Gioc Waterfall, one of the most iconic natural landmarks in northern Vietnam. Surrounded by limestone mountains, rice fields, and river scenery, the waterfall lies directly in the border area between Vietnam and China.

We board a bamboo raft and move close to the waterfall, giving us a powerful view of the cascading water and the unique feeling of floating near the international border before returning to the Vietnamese side.

Afterwards, we continue to Nguom Ngao Cave, a magnificent limestone cave filled with impressive stalactites, underground chambers, and natural rock formations.

In the afternoon, the 4WD adventure continues as we follow a spectacular off-road border route. These special patrol roads are used by local border forces and are still little known to ordinary travellers. The scenery is wild, dramatic, and remote, with mountain ridges, valleys, hidden villages, and beautiful viewpoints along the way.

Before reaching Cao Bang City, we pass through the striking landscape around Thung Mountain, often known as the "Angel Eye Mountain" area.

Dinner and overnight in Cao Bang City.
  • Day 4: Cao Bang - Revolutionary Forest Route - Ba Be National Park

    • Meals: B/L/D
Accommodation: Ba Be Jungle Houses or similar

After breakfast, we leave Cao Bang and continue our jeep expedition through winding mountain passes and tobacco-growing valleys. This is a quiet and scenic part of the northeast, where rural life remains simple and traditional.

We then drive into a protected forest area connected to Vietnam's revolutionary history. In the past, these hidden forest routes and remote villages were used by the Viet Minh as secret bases. This was also an area where Ho Chi Minh stayed and moved discreetly while being sheltered by local families during the revolutionary period.

The route continues through around 10 km of forest before reconnecting with the newer mountain road. We stop for lunch on the way, then continue towards Ba Be National Park.

By late afternoon, we arrive at Ba Be Lake, one of the most peaceful and beautiful natural lake regions in Vietnam. Tonight, we stay in a charming lakeside property designed with natural stone and rustic wood, located close to the water and surrounded by the calm atmosphere of the national park.

Dinner and overnight at Ba Be.
  • Day 5: Ba Be Lake - Hanoi

    • Meals: B/L

This morning is a time to slow down after several days of adventurous 4WD travel. At sunrise, we board a local boat and cruise across the calm waters of Ba Be Lake, surrounded by limestone mountains, forested slopes, and peaceful lakeside scenery.

Depending on the weather and local conditions, there will be time to swim or kayak on the lake before returning for breakfast.

After breakfast, we leave Ba Be and begin the drive back to Hanoi. Along the way, we pass through mountain roads, rural villages, and green tea hills, with a stop for lunch before returning to the busy rhythm of the capital.

Arrival in Hanoi in the late afternoon.

End of the 5-day 4WD expedition.
