Summer climate and weather in Vietnam

Vietnam is a long, narrow country, stretching over 2,000 km from north to south. Located in the monsoon zone, this Southeast Asian country enjoys a warm, humid climate from north to south. However, the weather varies considerably from region to region, with the climatic frontier at Da Nang and its famous Hai Van Pass. While summer, which runs from mid-May to the end of August, may be a good option for some travellers, it's important to be well prepared and to know the particularities of this season.

Summer in northern Vietnam

Summer is the rainy season in northern Vietnam, with heavy rainfall from May to October and a peak in July and August. Temperatures are also high, averaging 30°C.

Summer in central Vietnam

Central Vietnam also experiences precipitation (the summer monsoon, from May to November), but it is lighter and staggered in relation to the north and south. Note that on the central highlands, in Da Lat, Ban Me Thuot or Plei Ku, temperatures are much lower than on the coastal plains.

Summer in southern Vietnam

Southern Vietnam has a tropical climate, with hot, humid temperatures all year round. Summer is the rainy season, but rainfall is generally lighter than in the north and usually only occurs in the late afternoon. Although they can cause flooding and the closure of some accommodation outside the big cities, the rains, which are often abundant, can be an ideal time for families to travel to Vietnam. However, it is not advisable to travel to Phu Quoc during this period, as this is when rainfall is heaviest.

Water temperature

Water temperatures remain high throughout the year, fluctuating between 25°C and 28°C along the coast.

Advantages and disadvantages of visiting Vietnam in summer

Good to know

July is a very busy month, with crowded sites and attractions, as it's both the peak vacation season in Europe and the Vietnamese vacation period. It is therefore strongly recommended to book tickets and accommodation well in advance.
On the other hand, August is considered one of the best months of the summer to explore Vietnam: pleasant weather and slightly less crowded sites as the summer vacations draw to a close are just two of the main advantages of visiting Vietnam in August.

Advantages of traveling to Vietnam in summer

  • ♦ Price: airfares and hotel prices are generally cheaper in summer than in high season (November to April).
  • Fewer people: summer is low season in Vietnam, which means there are fewer tourists and prices are generally lower. This makes for a more peaceful experience at the tourist sites (bearing in mind our recommendation above).
  • Trekking: The northern part of Vietnam is exceptionally beautiful in summer, when the rice paddies are lush green and the mountains are clear.
  • Festivals: Summer is a time of many festivals in Vietnam, such as the Da Nang Fireworks Festival (in July, every two years) or the mid-autumn festival, Tet Trung Thu, which is celebrated throughout the country during the full moon of lunar August (September/October, depending on the year). And don't forget the lantern festival in Hoi An, held every 14 days of the month....
  • Tropical fruits: Summer is the season for tropical fruits in Vietnam, such as durian, mangosteen and lychee.

Disadvantages of travelling to Vietnam in summer

  • Rainy season in the north: Rain can be intense and frequent in northern Vietnam during the summer, which can disrupt your travel plans and even hinder certain activities, such as hiking or trekking.
  • Heat and humidity: The combination of heat and humidity can be exhausting, especially in southern Vietnam. The combination of humidity and heat can make sensitive travellers feel suffocated. Over time, you get used to it, but don't forget to stay well hydrated and take along a raincoat.
  • ♦ From May to November, the most intense storms generally occur in August and September, especially along the northern and northeastern coastal areas.

Tips for travelling to Vietnam in summer

  • ✓ Choose your region according to the climate: if you want to avoid rain, opt for central or southern Vietnam.
  • ✓ Pack light, comfortable clothing: breathable fabrics and hats are essential for protection from the sun and heat.
  • ✓ Stay hydrated: it's crucial to stay hydrated to avoid dehydration caused by heat and humidity.
  • ✓ Apply sunscreen: the sun is very strong in Vietnam, so it's important to apply sunscreen with a protection factor of at least 30. Be sure to reapply sunscreen frequently, especially after swimming or sweating.
  • ✓ Beware of mosquitoes: Mosquitoes are present all year round in Vietnam, but are particularly prevalent in summer. Wear insect repellent and long clothing to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

What to pack for a summer trip to Vietnam

If you're traveling to Vietnam during the summer, it's important to pack more than just basic toiletries, hygiene products and a first-aid kit. As we've already mentioned, temperatures can be high and humidity can be high throughout the country. Light, breathable clothing is recommended, such as cotton T-shirts, tank tops, shorts and skirts. Lightweight fabrics allow air to circulate and help wick away perspiration, keeping you cool and comfortable. To protect yourself from showers, it's almost essential to pack a light raincoat or windbreaker. Long-sleeved clothing and light pants are also recommended for protection against mosquitoes, which are more numerous at this time of year.
If you're planning to explore bustling cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, it's advisable to choose light, comfortable footwear. Sneakers or walking shoes are a good option, as they offer good arch support and cushioning for walking on hard surfaces.
If you're planning to hike in Vietnam's mountainous regions, such as Sapa or Dalat, it's important to have appropriate hiking boots. Choose waterproof, sturdy shoes with non-slip soles to ensure good traction on rough trails. Make sure they're comfortable and well-fitting, too, to avoid blisters and sore feet.
Sandals or flip-flops will be your best companions for spending time on the beaches and islands of Vietnam. Opt for comfortable models with rubber soles, so you can walk comfortably on the sand and wear them easily in the water. Make sure they fit snugly to avoid losing them in the water.

What to see and do in Vietnam in summer?

Must-see attractions

  • ♦ Cruise Halong Bay: this UNESCO World Heritage site is one of Vietnam's most popular tourist destinations. If you prefer a more tranquil experience, consider its lesser-known counterpart, Lan Ha Bay. Located south of Halong Bay and east of Cat Ba Island - the region's largest island - this natural wonder is perfect for kayaking, swimming and (almost) intimate cruising.
  • ♦ Hiking in the northern mountains: Vietnam's northern mountains are home to some of the country's most beautiful scenery. You can hike through rice terraces, visit ethnic villages and admire spectacular views.
  • ♦ Relax on the beach: Vietnam boasts a long coastline with many beautiful beaches. Among the most popular beach destinations are Nha Trang and Mui Ne (if you're planning to visit Phu Quoc Island, don't forget to check the weather). Here, you can relax on the sandy shores, swim and enjoy a variety of water sports.
  • ♦ The southern region of Vietnam is a vast area filled with rivers, canals and islands. It's the ideal place to go boating, explore floating markets and immerse yourself in rural Vietnamese life.
  • ♦ Take a trip to the historic cities of Hoi An and Hue: Hoi An and Hue are two ancient cities on Vietnam's central coast. Both cities are home to numerous temples, tombs and historic buildings.
  • ♦ Explore the Cu Chi tunnels: the Cu Chi tunnels are an underground network of tunnels that were used by the Vietnamese during the war against the Americans. A popular tourist destination, they offer a glimpse into the country's history.

Getting off the beaten track

  • ♦ Explore ethnic regions: there are many villages in northern Vietnam, with diverse ethnic communities, where you can explore local culture and customs.
  • ♦ Explore the Tham Phay cave, located in Ba Be National Park in northeast Vietnam. This impressive cavern, nicknamed the Son Doong of the North, is just as impressive as its famous sister, yet more accessible (in both senses of the word: it can be reached by walking through the jungle, and costs far less than Son Doong). Did you know that... Ba Be, located in the low mountain region of northern Vietnam, is distinguished by the splendor of its mountains, waterfalls and freshwater lake, and by the different cultures of the ethnic groups who live there. The mountains, sky and clouds have settled into the clear waters of the lake, with a few boats gliding quietly here and there. A real favorite, as far as we're concerned!
  • ♦ Trekking in the Sapa mountains: let yourself be enchanted by the spectacular panoramas and picturesque villages of Sapa.
  • ♦ Learn to cook like a local: join a cooking class and discover the secrets of traditional Vietnamese dishes.
  • ♦ Authentic home-stay immersion: enjoy a unique home-stay experience and share the daily life of a Vietnamese family.
  • ♦ Discover local markets: Visit local markets, treasures of culture and handicrafts, and pick up unique souvenirs.

Conclusion

Summer can be an ideal time to visit Vietnam, offering lower prices and fewer crowds. Don't forget to choose your region according to the climate, and be prepared for the risk of rain and typhoons. By following our advice and exploring off the beaten track, you'll enjoy an unforgettable adventure in Vietnam.
