Dress like an onion!

In Sapa, the climate is unpredictable! The solution? Dress in layers, like an onion. A waterproof and windproof jacket is essential to protect you from unexpected downpours and mountain winds. Opt for lightweight, breathable, and quick-drying hiking pants, ideally convertible into shorts to adapt to temperature variations. Pack two to three technical t-shirts made of breathable material, avoiding cotton which dries slowly. Three pairs of quick-drying athletic underwear are recommended to stay fresh. Even in summer, a sweater or fleece will be appreciated for cool mornings and evenings. To protect your feet, three pairs of anti-blister socks made of merino wool or synthetic material are essential. Finally, as well as an effective sun cream, don't forget a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face and neck from the sun (which can be aggressive at altitude). If your trek takes place between October and April, gloves and a beanie will be necessary to brave the cold.

Your feet are your best allies during a trek, so it's particularly important to take care of them! High-top hiking shoes that are waterproof and offer excellent grip are vital for the sometimes muddy and slippery paths of Sapa. After a day of effort, the comfort of a pair of light sandals is pure bliss for rest and showers. While walking poles are not mandatory, they can be very practical on steep terrain for better stability.

Practical and safety essentials

For the practical and safety aspects, a small backpack of 30 to 40 liters, light, comfortable, and with an integrated rain cover is your best companion. If you plan to spend the night in a homestay, a lightweight sleeping bag is recommended for cozy nights. A headlamp with spare batteries is essential to illuminate your way in case of power outages or during night walks. To stay hydrated, a reusable water bottle (1-2L) is necessary, and water purification tablets are an ingenious trick because drinking water is scarce on the trails. Prepare a first-aid kit containing bandages, disinfectant, basic medications, anti-inflammatory cream, mosquito repellent, and sunscreen. Don't forget your identification documents and some cash.

Hygiene and little extras

Regarding hygiene and small extras, a minimalist toiletry kit including a toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap, wet wipes, and toilet paper will be amply sufficient. A microfibre towel, light and quick-drying, is ideal to avoid having a wet towel at the bottom of your bag. A Swiss army knife and a portable charger are technological superheroes that will get you out of many situations. In Vietnam, outlets are generally compatible with European plugs (Type C or F) and the voltage is 220V ; an adapter or converter might be necessary if you are coming from North America. Capture your memories with your camera or smartphone, accompanied by extra batteries and memory cards. Finally, plan for energy snacks like cereal bars, dried fruit, or chocolate to recharge your own batteries.
